Top Cap
Our Board on Board Wood Privacy fences come standard with the cedar side trim. The 2 x 6 or 2 x 8 cedar top cap is an available upgrade option, which provides the fence with a decorative finish. The top cap also adds even more sturdiness and stability, providing additional longevity to your fence, although many customers choose this option for the design and curb appeal that the top cap adds to the fence. Additionally, adding a cap to the top of the fence prevents water from getting down inside the overlapping pickets.
Boxed Posts
Although metal posts are recommended (and widely popular) for the construction of both residential and commercial fences in Allen, due to the weather and the soil here, it is a concept that is unique to our area. Many homeowners who move to Dallas from other states are not familiar with metal posts, and prefer the look of the traditional wood posts. We offer boxed posts as an option for homeowners who prefer the traditional wood post look. Boxed Posts are metal posts that are “boxed in” on three sides, hiding the metal posts from view while still providing the necessary support for a long lasting fence in Dallas. Boxed posts are available as an upgrade, and can be plain as seen below on the right, or built with “fluted” wood, as shown on the left, for an even more decorative look.
Stacked Trim
Our privacy wood fences are built standard with the side trim. Additional, decorative trim can be added for a tiered finish. This is a very popular option among our customers, especially in conjunction with the top cap as shown below.
Arched Trim and Corbels
Arched trim is an upgrade option that we offer to that gives our customers to customize their fence and give it a unique finish. Corbels come in many shapes and sizes, and decorative metal ornaments can be added such as stars, initials, or other decals offering a truly unique and personalized wood fence.
Windows and Decorative Ornaments
A decorative ornament can set your fence apart from other fences. Metal ornaments are typically added to gates, but can also be added to a fence to create a window. Fence windows are convenient for dog owners, because sometimes letting your dog see out of the fence will satisfy his curiosity reducing his desire to dig out or jump over the fence. If you want to maintain complete privacy for your backyard, ornaments can be attached to the fence and framed out without the window behind it.

site. The application form can be
downloaded from our internet site.
Applicants are usually not required to
submit a site plan.
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
The cost is based on the value of the work
with a minimum fee of $100.00.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO
GET A FENCE PERMIT?
Normally, a fence permit is issued while you
wait. Historic Districts take longer due to
the review requirement by the Landmark
Commission.

WHEN IS A FENCE PERMIT
REQUIRED?
A fence permit is required to erect a fence or
wall over four (4) feet in a required front yard
setback or over six (6) feet high if located
elsewhere on private property.
WHAT SPECIAL REGULATIONS
SHOULD I BE AWARE OF?
Special zoning areas called Planned
Development Districts, Historic Districts, and
Conservation Districts may have unique
requirements for fences. To determine if you
are in one of these districts and to obtain
details about district regulations, call 214-948-
4480 or look at the zoning maps on our
internet site at www.dallascityhall.com. Locate
City Departments, then click on Department of
Development Services, and finally Zoning Maps.
If you are not in a special district the
following general rules apply:
In a required front yard setback, fences
for single family and duplex uses are limited
to four (4) feet above grade. Corner lots
may have both street frontages considered
as front yard setbacks. NOTE: Must have
scale site plan for zoning approval.
Fences on the remainder of the lot may not
exceed nine (9) feet in height.
Barbed wire may not be used for fencing
unless it is located six (6) feet or more above
grade AND does not project beyond the
property line.
Fences may not be located in easements.
Swimming pool enclosures have
additional fence regulations. See the “How
to get a Swimming Pool Permit” guide at any
Building Inspection office, call 214-948-4480,

All fences must provide fire-fighting access
to the side and rear yard.
A fence must not be placed within a
visibility triangle at street, alley or
driveway intersections if the fence is higher
than two and a half (2 1/2 ) feet measured
from the top of the adjacent street curb.
